If getting a six-pack is one of your goals, should you be training your abs?

First, it’s worth emphasizing that research shows training your abs has no effect on helping you lose abdominal fat [1]. So doing more abs training won’t make your stomach leaner or give you abs directly.

But as with any muscle, we are able to grow and develop the underlying abdominal muscles. Progressively overloading weighted abdominal exercises like the Cable Ab Pulldown and Cable Wood Chops help grow your abs, which can make your abs look more developed once you have leaned down.

So while abdominal training won’t directly give you abs and your abs will be trained while performing compound movements, it still has benefits to isolate your abs for them to grow more.
