People often claim that calories in vs. calories out is the only thing that matters when you’re dieting. While energy balance plays a huge role, this equation is far more nuanced than some would like to think.

🤓 For example, take this study that compared the diet-induced thermogenesis (calories out) after eating a whole food or processed sandwich. The whole food sandwich resulted in nearly twice as much calorie burning in the measured time period. Therefore, the quality of your calories can absolutely affect energy balance!
