LOW BACK PAIN: How Negative Perceptions & Beliefs can affect us⭕️ ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Pain is a concept that is yet to be fully understood, but over the past few years, many emerging sciences have developed different models to explain it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Why does everybody (at least one time during their life) experience some sort of lower back pain ? Is it really a structural issue? Muscle imbalances? Is our physical structure really that weak?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In reality our spines are really strong and structurally sound, and the “mechanical model of pain” (structural anomalies, asymmetries, bad posture) doesn’t seem to be supported by research or have any meaningful correlation. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is where the neurobiological model of pain comes in, which shows how the brain is capable of modulating sensory experience based on our concious and subconscious beliefs, environment, our emotional state and for how long the pain has been experienced. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In other words, the brain gathers sensory signals while simultaneously sending new ones to fine-tune the sensitivity of our nerves, to frame our sensory experience, and to adjust how we interpret a sensory stimulus.’ It then integrates these factors together with the signals from peripheral tissues, ultimately generating what we feel. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When we experience chronic pain, we unconciously start fearing movement, ending in a state of hyper-reactity. Our nervous system starts becoming hypersensitive, perceiving pain far out of proportions even in response to stimuli that would normally be perceived as benign. (Process called Central Sensitization)⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This altered/increased perception of pain has nothing to do with our physical structure (which has evolved well enough to be able to resist in various circumstances), but rather with our concious and subconscious beliefs and emotional state towards the issue, which have developed over time into chronic pain. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Managing stress & anxiety, exercising, as well as performing normal daily activity, are very important in order to reduce the power of the negative loop we get stuck within!
