Why can Hip Thrusts work to “isolate” the glutes?⭕️
Hip Thrusts don’t challenge glutes at their longest lengths, butt they can still be a viable option for those seeking to work the glutes specifically.
Why?
Because the glute max muscle experiences substantial mechanical tension through this exercise, due to the distribution of weight during the movement.
As we extend our hips and maintain knee flexion, hamstrings over-shorten: this state limits their ability to generate substantial force, thereby transferring the majority of the work to the glutes.
Adductors have their best leverage through deep hip flexion (which is why the are worked greatly with heavy deep squats). As you extend your hips during a hip thrust, the glutes are tasked with handling most of the weight.
Based on cumulative evidence, studies suggest that challenging muscles at longer lengths promote superior hypertrophic results.
Now, it’s important to mention that this does not automatically disqualify other exercises, because they will still produce hypertrophy as long as sufficiently trained with progressive resistance, over a long period of time.
While influencers like to fight over which exercise is *the best* and which is the *worst*, bashing exercises and trying to belittle specific movements, we have to remind ourselves that context matters, and real people (of various ages) training at the gym, won’t always want or need to pick the “most optimal movements” to be active and adhere to their training program.
The best exercises and the best training programs are the ones that actually get done. Progress on the movements that you enjoy and workout long term. 💪
