Since summertime is over, it’s worth giving vitamin D some attention!

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that your skin synthesizes when it’s exposed to sunlight. Since most people work indoors and you may not live in a place with much sunlight, vitamin D deficiencies are quite common [1].

This is unfortunate because having sufficient levels of vitamin D has several health benefits, like improved immune function, heart health, and increased performance [2-4]. Spending a good amount of time in the sun now that it’s summer can help fix any potential deficiencies.

But if you’re currently staying in a place where the sun almost never shines, supplementation is worth considering. Before supplementing with any vitamin/mineral supplement though, it’s a good idea to test if you truly are deficient.

If you do decide to supplement with vitamin D, research suggests that 2000IU of vitamin D is a good middle range to fix a deficiency [5]. But be sure to consult with your doctor first since the severity of your vitamin D deficiency influences the desired dose. Scientific references are in the comments!
