using unilateral exercises – core activation.
You see, our core muscles are tasked with stabilizing the spine and pelvis, especially during dynamic movement. When we perform a unilateral exercise, like a lunge for instance, this imposes an imbalanced environment for our spine and pelvis. In turn, we need to have extra oblique activation to stabilize our torso and optimize performance.
This is one reason why many practitioners feel that unilateral exercises are more functional, but they’re also a good bet for a “2 birds with 1 stone” exercise. If you’re short on time and want to get some core training in during your leg workout, unilateral exercises are one way to do that!
