Roughly 20% of trainees in the USA train within 4 hours of bedtime [1]. A concern some people have is that training this late interferes with sleep. Recently, a meta-analysis got published and it helps bring more clarity to this matter [2].

In this 2018 meta-analysis, the researchers reviewed 23 studies on late exercise and sleep. The main finding was that as long as your training session ends at least 1 hour before bedtime, your workout will not interfere with sleep. Training sessions that are done less than an hour before bed may have a negative effect (although it’s rare someone trains <60min before bed)

So if for any reason you prefer to train in the evening, you can do so without negatively affecting sleep (if you stop <1hr before bedtime & limit stimulant consumption before training).

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that there always will be individual differences. Some people may feel too energized to fall asleep after a late workout. Or maybe, your gym has bright lighting and that increases your wakefulness at night. So it’s not black-and-white. If for any reason you don’t like to train in the evening, you obviously don’t have to.
