Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is used for a variety of health purposes. Spirulina is actually a decently high quality protein and contains some unique bioactive components that have a variety of health effects. Studies have shown a wide range of benefits, from improved cholesterol, to reduced blood pressure, and even improved glycemic control. Spirulina can also be useful for reducing the severity of allergy symptoms. Overall, spirulina can be a great supplement for general health, but bodybuilders may want to avoid taking it around their workouts due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that will likely impair growth signals.
