Always wondered, are there any IFBB pros using this or having humongous exogenous levels of testosterone coming in you definitely need those carbs present all the time ?

I won’t ask about Intermittent Fasting because for that I already have the answer 🙂

Not everyone does well on true keto, like 20g of carbs per day.

Low carb or carb cycling is pretty common during prep.

Can’t answer you 100% on that one… But I see how it can be used to squeeze that extra glycogen and water out of the muscle before a heavy heavy carb load-up. The idea here is to have your muscles as flat and depleted (both of water and glycogen) as possible, so when you do carb up, you achieve a higher overall volume than you had before.

Of course, in order to achieve true keto you have to keep proteins relatively low to moderate otherwise your body is gonna convert those aminoacids from food into glucose (in a process known as gluconeogenesis). Once you’re using glucose as an energy source instead of ketone bodies, you’re out of keto. So as big bodybuilder, this individual would have to consume insanely large amounts of fat to preserve caloric maintenance (and muscle mass), which can (and will) have its toll on the gastrointestinal system.

Personally, I don’t see myself eating 3000kcal of fats a day without living in the bathroom, if you know what I mean. Even my liver suffers on a high fat diet.

In the end, I believe it’s doable for a very specific phase within an IFBB pro’s prep, but it probably isn’t a good idea to extend it, nor even necessary.

Good point, Thanos. Many people forget that the body can turn protein into carbs and leave ketosis, even if you don’t eat carbs at all.

I doubt it, most of them carb cycle. Keto is more for physique competitors .

I believe Dennis James mentioned Ramy being on keto few years ago, but probably for a short period pre-competition.

It’s science, though.
