As strength training coaches and students, we want to teach people how to perform exercises in the best way in order to maximize the results (whatever those results may be). ⁣

This means that we often fall in love with ideas or biases that we think are true, due to common sense, personal perceptions/biases/opinions, and ideas… and while sometimes those ideas may very well be right (if backed up by relevant data)… that’s not always the case! ⁣

For example, let’s take a look at the topic of spine loading, and how a once believed right “mechanical model” doesn’t really apply to dynamic movements, and what was originally thought to be an optimal range of movement within a theoretical “neutral” spine.. likely doesn’t really hold ground in our current understanding of pain/injury science.

But that’s alright: science is not about being right, it’s about being less wrong over time as more evidence is provided.

Acknowledging mistakes, changing your mind, challenging your ideas is a strength, not a weakness, and we shouldn’t get defensive if proven wrong.⁣

Many times (whatever field you’re in) you’ll find yourself challenged by new ideas (which is always the case) and you shouldn’t be scared of it. ⁣that opens up the possibility to grow and learn more.

At the end of the day, we’re all trying to learn and get better at whatever we do, and learning from our mistakes is likely the only way to become more knowledgeable at our craft!⁣
