Here are some general guidelines on how to make an exercise more quad dominant:
.
🕺🏽In order to create a biomechanical environment where where the knee extension moment acts as the prime mover for facilitating triple extension, we must either reduce hip flexion, and/or encourage greater knee flexion angles.
.
🔬So the trunk must stay upright, or the knee must project over the toe. These rules will help to optimally target the 3 vasti heads. For training the rectus femoris, our most superficial quadriceps head, a knee extension machine (or reverse nordic) is going to be your best bet.
.
⛰These form constraints can be realized by increasing plantarflexion using an orthosis (wedge/lifters), utilizing an assistance method to stay upright (hatfield, wall squat), or accessing end range dorsiflexion (deep forward lunge).
.
🏝Many of the quad dominant exercises you know and love employ a combination of these three methods.
