While calorie balance is incredibly useful for tracking weight loss, many fail to realize just how many factors can play a role.

💥 Like we discussed on Monday, the food you eat can determine how many calories you burn from that meal – this is diet-induced thermogenesis. As this study shows, processed foods actually cause a lower DIT than whole foods.

💥 What does this mean? If you eat a diet high in processed foods (frozen foods, fast foods, etc.), your overall energy expenditure might be lower than a simple calculator would suggest. If you’re trying to lose fat, I’d minimize processed food intake.

▪️ Based on: Barr, S., & Wright, J. (2010). Postprandial energy expenditure in whole-food and processed-food meals: implications for daily energy expenditure. Food & Nutrition Research, 54(1), 5144.

There is no such thing as junk food. There is only food and junk. If it is man made (processed) it is junk! Simple!
