Casein represents ~80% of the protein in milk. It is a slow-digesting protein because of its ability to create a gel in our stomach. Because of this property it acts as a supply (deposit) of aminoacids for a longer period compared to the fast absorption of whey. This is the main reason why a lot of athletes use it before sleep in order to have an anti-catabolic effect during the night. 🥛
Some studies showed lower leucine levels after supplementation with casein which means the digestion of it was slower. Therefore its ability to act as a supply of amino acids is very important in reducing protein breakdown.

In this anti breakdown effect a major role in protein synthesis it’s the high content of leucine (which activates this synthesis). By this process it enhances muscle growth. 👍
Best to use casein when you know you won’t eat in a long time or before bed because studies showed that protein balance is positive when supplement with casein.
