Back in the day, the general consensus was that you *must* have breakfast. This was mostly based on the assumption that breakfast will “kickstart your metabolism.” But as our understanding of human metabolism has advanced through scientific research, we now know that fasting in the morning does not decrease your metabolic rate [1].

In support of this, there are literature reviews showing you can achieve similar weight loss with many different meal frequencies, as long as your nutritional needs for the day are met [2]. So the claims about getting into “starvation mode” when you skip breakfast and this harming fat loss make little sense.

We can keep things simple. If you dislike eating right after you wake up, feel free to skip breakfast and consume the majority of your nutritional needs later in the day. Forcing yourself to have breakfast when you don’t feel like it may do more harm than good. There’s research indicating that force-feeding breakfast can lead to overconsumption of calories in a day [3].
