Partial reps to promote greater hypertrophy? ⭕️
The prevailing belief has long been that a full range of motion (ROM) is optimal for muscle hypertrophy. However, recent research is shifting the focus from ROM alone, to the examination of muscle lengths. Interestingly, it has been demonstrated that exercises targeting muscles at extended muscle lengths tend to yield greater results for hypertrophy.
What important to note is that the emphasis is not solely put on ROM but on the extent to which muscle fibers are stretched under tension, (which indeed can be maximal with full ROM too!).
Evidence suggests that even partial repetitions at extended muscle lengths can be highly effective for muscle growth, and while a full ROM remains a recommended general approach due to its ability to inherently train longer lengths, there is also a role for partial repetitions performed at extended muscle lengths.
