I feel like we get lost so much in the process of building muscles that many other (maybe even more important ?) benefits of resistance training, go almost unnoticed.

After spending quite some time in this field, here are 3 long term qualities that you acquire with consistent training, that in my opinion are very important.

In fact, I feel like qualities like these help us in so many other ways and different areas of life that it really makes training not at all “just about aesthetics”: maybe it starts that way, but it matures into something else with time.

Perhaps this can motivate people to keep going. Learning to find joy in doing things that take a lot of time to be accomplished.

1) Resilience: getting comfortable with doing hard tasks, becoming tougher, withstanding adversity. Lifting heavy weights is not easy, especially mentally but also physically. So is staying on track with dieting. Mastering emotions and feelings, really becomes an important part of the process when trying to maximize results. And that’s a skill you acquire only when repeating it over and over again across a long period of time.

Which brings me to the next point..

Discipline: you do it whether you like it or not, because you know it is important for you. You don’t rely on motivation. Some days are easy: you feel motivated and energetic, but some on the other hand, are hard and even disappointing. Yet you find a way to still do it. And that matters!

These qualities improve Self-Belief and self efficacy. If you prove yourself you’re capable of sticking through thick and thin, and get to where you said you would get it’s actually a quality that a lot of people never develop. Because it’s hard, boring, painful and slow. But if you can do it in fitness, then you can try applying the same concept on other areas of life, and see how that turns out.
