What actually causes muscle soreness following a workout ?⭕️

“DOMS” (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) has always been chased by many masochistic-personality lifters who enjoy “feeling” the effects of a workout days after.

Yet we know that excessive training volume and strenuously long workouts rarely contribute to productivity at the gym, due to the high amount of fatigue accumulation that follows, which doesn’t really allow us to retrain the same muscles until fully recovered… which can take up several days depending on the severity of the session.

Interestingly enough, DOMS have always been attributed to muscle damage, yet, emerging research is pointing the finger more towards the nerve endings of the muscle spindles, as a primary cause for it.

Sure, Muscle Damage can still occur as a coinciding phenomenon, but it looks like it’s likely not a primary cause for the symptoms of DOMS.
