Fitness Mindset

You may know the saying “Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” It’s the (often subconscious) actions you perform daily that make you the person you are today. The same holds true for fitness. For the most part, your daily nutrition and exercise habits define your fitness levels.

Often we are solely focused on an outcome goal like “losing X pounds of fat”. Having a specific goal in mind definitely has its value. But to achieve any fitness objective, our main concern should be the behaviors that slowly lead to fitness progress (like controlling your portions, training 2-4x per week, sleeping well, etc.).

We basically want to create a system that allows you to be consistent in the actions you need to take to achieve your goals. Something I like to use with my clients is shifting the focus from “losing X pounds of fat” to committing to 3-4 action goals done almost daily (see examples in the image above). Placing your focus on staying consistent with healthy behaviors that you can realistically stick to makes your fitness journey a more sustainable and productive process.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that a healthy lifestyle is worth more than just “looking leaner or more muscular”. As I have stated many times before, the benefits of an active lifestyle are far-reaching. Improved mood, better sleep, increased bone health, etc. are examples of underlying fitness benefits [1-3]. You don’t need a “physique goal” to benefit from a fitness lifestyle!
