Muscle soreness is a part of strength training. But the main goal of your workouts should not be creating “muscle soreness”, it should be progressive overload if muscle development is the goal.

Although some soreness can be a by-product of effective training, muscle soreness by itself is not a good indicator of how effective your training was for building muscle [1]. The high degree of muscle-damage responsible for soreness is typically caused by a training stress your muscles are not accustomed to [2]. This explains why people feel more sore when they train again after a training break. Exercises that emphasize the eccentric (like Romanian deadlifts) also result in more muscle damage, oftentimes making you feel more sore.

The more often you perform certain types of exercises in your training, the less damage and soreness they cause over time. This is known as the “Repeated Bout Effect” and it explains why it’s perfectly normal you feel less sore as you train consistently [3]. So if you’re making good progress in the gym, but no longer feel sore, there is nothing to worry about. Feeling less sore over time is part of the training process!
