Cardio before or after training?

While cardio is a key component of your general fitness, research shows that cardio before lifting weights negatively impacts your lifting performance [1].  On the flip side, there is a good amount of research showing that if you perform cardio after lifting, you are able to lift more weight in your strength session, while still effectively improving cardiovascular fitness [2, 3].

So for most people, I would suggest performing your cardio after lifting or even separating your cardio completely from your workout by performing it on another day.

🔑 Side note: this does not apply to low-intensity cardio bouts of 5-10 minutes done before training as a warm-up. It’s definitely fine to incorporate 5-10 minutes of low-intensity cardio into your warm-up routine.
